Environment

A hospital bed lasts ten years or more. Most of what we do for the environment is about keeping beds in service for longer and recycling them properly at the end.

Take-back

When we deliver a new bed, we take back the bed it replaces at no charge, whatever its make. In 2025 we collected 1,214 beds. Beds that can be refurbished are stripped, rebuilt and tested at Morley and sold with a one-year warranty to care providers and to hospitals outside the UK; the rest are dismantled. 94% of the weight of a dismantled VR-series bed is recycled.

Electrical equipment and batteries

As the producer of the beds and pumps we place on the market, we meet our obligations under the waste electrical and electronic equipment regulations through a compliance scheme, and take back used equipment from our customers. We collect used battery packs free of charge and send them for recycling.

Packaging

New beds are delivered on reusable steel transport frames with a single cover, which our drivers take away. Parts are sent in recycled cardboard; we take back exchange-unit packaging with the returned unit.

Our vans

Our engineers drive about 2.1 million miles a year. Nine of our 36 service vans are electric, and we are replacing the rest as their leases end, where the territory allows.

Morley

The Morley building has roof-mounted solar panels that supply about a third of its electricity. The workshop’s heating uses waste heat from the test bay.
