Overview
The VR-7 is the intensive-care bed Van Roon has made in Leiden since 2018 and supplied in the UK and Ireland since 2019. It is designed around the tasks that take up an intensive-care nurse’s shift: repositioning, weighing, proning preparation, transfers to imaging and theatre, and resuscitation.
Every position the bed can reach is available from the footboard panel, and the positions used in an emergency have their own controls that work whatever the panel is showing. Backrest angle, lateral tilt and the patient’s weight are shown on the panel and on both side rails.
Lateral tilt to 25° each side
Supports turning and pressure-area care with one nurse. Tilt is stopped automatically at 15° unless the side rails on the low side are raised.
Cardiac chair position
One button takes the bed from flat to the chair position in 28 seconds, with the leg section lowered and the platform tilted in reverse Trendelenburg.
CPR release on both sides
Red release handles on both sides of the backrest bring it flat in under ten seconds without power. The electric CPR button on the footboard panel also levels the platform and lowers it to working height.
Emergency Trendelenburg
A dedicated button on the footboard panel and on both head-end side rails tilts the platform to 16° head down, held for as long as the button is pressed.
Integrated scale
Four load cells in the platform frame weigh the patient to 0.1 kg, with tare memory for accessories and a trend of the last 30 weighings on the panel.
Patient-exit detection
Three sensitivity zones, from early warning when the patient moves towards the edge to an alarm when weight leaves the bed. The alarm can be relayed to the ward’s nurse call system.

Surfaces
The VR-7 is supplied with the mattress chosen for the unit. These Van Roon surfaces are tested with it:
- VR-A4 Alternating-pressure replacement mattress with lateral rotation, controlled from the VR-7 footboard panel or its own pump.
- VR-H2 Foam mattress with air cells beneath that can be powered when the patient’s risk rises, without changing the mattress.
- VR-F1 Castellated high-specification foam mattress with a zoned heel section and a vapour-permeable, two-way stretch cover.
Mattresses from other manufacturers may change the effective height of the side rails. Check the rail height above the compressed mattress against the instructions for use before using any other mattress.

Service
The VR-7 needs planned maintenance every 12 months, including an electrical safety test, a check of every movement and alarm, a load test of the side rails and a calibration check of the scale. Van Roon engineers carry the parts most often needed, so most faults are fixed at the first visit.
Hospital engineers who hold a current Level 2 certificate for the VR-7 can carry out planned maintenance and most repairs themselves. See technical training and service agreements.
