Batteries

Every VR-series bed has a battery so that it can be moved and positioned away from the mains. Since June 2025 replacement packs are lithium-ion.

Lithium-ion packs

The 24 V lithium-ion pack lasts about five years in normal use, against two to three for the lead-acid pack it replaces, and weighs 4.1 kg less. It needs controller firmware 4.10 or later, which every bed on our service records now has.

Lead-acid packs remain available until 31 December 2026. After that, beds with lead-acid packs are changed to lithium-ion when their packs next need replacing.

Setting the charge profile

The charge profile tells the bed which kind of pack is fitted. It must be set whenever a pack of a different kind is fitted:

  1. Fit the pack and connect the bed to the mains.
  2. On the footboard panel, open Settings › Battery › Charge profile, enter the service code and choose “Lithium-ion”.
  3. Check that the panel shows the pack charging and that the battery health screen shows the new pack.
  4. With the platform empty, re-zero the scale.

If the profile is left at “lead-acid” with a lithium-ion pack fitted, the scale can read up to 0.5 kg high while the bed is charging. See FSN-UK-2026-02.

Storage

Beds kept in store should be connected to the mains for at least 24 hours every three months. A lithium-ion pack left flat for more than six months may not recover and will then need replacing.

Returns and recycling

We collect used packs of either kind free of charge when we deliver new ones. Lithium-ion packs must be returned with their terminals covered, in the packaging the new pack came in. Damaged or swollen packs must not be posted: call the parts team, who will arrange collection.
